13 Effective Tips for a New “You” through Meditation

In our daily hustle, we often forget to look after our mind and body. But the Covid-19 pandemic has changed our life to such an extent we started taking care of ourselves to stay fit and healthy. Meditation should be a part of everyone's routine. It is a physical and mental exercise. It generally involves relaxation, awareness, focus, and concentration of mind. It is usually done in a sitting position with crossed legs, straight back, closed eyes, and both hands resting on our knees. Meditation needs to be practiced daily otherwise its results will be superficial. It is a kind of daily disciplined approach if you want to see a change in yourself.

Benefits of Meditation

Everyone benefits from meditation though it varies from person to person. It takes time to create new habits or change the old ones. It depends on one’s intention and initiative to start meditating; the sooner you start, the earlier and more benefits you reap. Following are some of the benefits of meditation:

1. You can meditate on a mat, cushion, or chair. The main element of meditation is body posture. The spine should be erect from the lower body to the neck area.

2. Morning is the best time to meditate as the environment is peaceful and the body is full of fresh energy.

3. It is suggested to follow meditation in the morning when your mind is awake and not sleepy or tired.

4. The place should be clean and noise-free where you can sit without any disturbances. There is a great influence of place on the mind.

5. You can start with as little as 5 minutes and increase 1 or 2 minutes per week. Timing and duration for meditation matter a lot. It is advisable to start with a small duration and increase slowly as you will feel comfortable.

6. Results won’t be positive if you push yourself to meditation. Your inner-self should allow you to start meditating.

7. It is mandatory to relax your body with deep breathing exercises before meditation.

8. It is always suggested to wear loose and comfortable clothes.

9. It is the human tendency that you start feeling demotivated if you lose focus in the beginning. This is completely normal. It happens with everyone who is a beginner.

10. The most important tip to consider while meditation is to put your phone on airplane mode to avoid distraction.

11. There is a unique benefit of feeling happy during the process of meditation.

12. It is advisable to play some light soothing background music.

13. It is a good idea to pen down short notes in the diary after the meditation.

The human mind works on the pros and cons of everything. Unless you don’t know the benefits of meditation and tips to follow, you will never start as per the human tendency. There is a common saying that usually comes to my mind “It will only happen if we try.” When I started doing deep breathing exercises, it changed my perspective to look at situations around me. Even counting back helps a lot to cool down the anger. These exercises are helpful to divert your mind. There is a famous quote related to this aspect, which is “Conquer your mind to conquer the world.”

There are various misconceptions about meditation that it is only for spiritual gurus. You will get a lot of answers after you start meditating about why people are going for meditation. We generally have myths that our mind is restless so we can’t meditate or it is a boring process. As you start meditating you will notice a daily change in yourself.
